It is just with the end so it starts to falter, although slap-right up finale rescues it regarding ‘red’. Admirably staged and you can wisely dialogued, it will have no great difficulty during the traditions down its incredibly unappealing name.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Film Bulletin told you “The film actions at the a quick speed, the latest dialogue are slick and you will characterisations basically effective. New film’s copywriter and director, Robert Rossen, creates good multidimensional chess game, to own mortal bet, ranging from Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) worked at gambling enterprise and you may old good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic software, the fresh cast’s suavely controlled body gestures out-of love and you can risk, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will smartly assertive pictures (together with their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet detail by detail spectacle a low profile antique of your genre.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, because the a police inspector, as well as within the score . Even though the patch observe a common trend, brand new characterizations try fresh therefore the performances adequate to help you overbalance. Dialog was terse and you may relevant, preventing the psychological, phoney touch. Strange camera basics come-along once in a while so you’re able to intensify desire and momentarily stop the interest. Good teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling since manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand spanking new blogger and you can representative music producer, together with aids in rendering it a mellow manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

Its generally a question of seeing Mr. Powell experience his paces fashionably while you are an enormous throw off stars and you may actresses bring him traditional help. Evelyn Keyes performs the nice absolutely nothing lady just who brings forth the fresh best in him and Ellen Received is the smooth and you can slinky vixen which gets him to your jams. Thomas Gomez is fatty just like the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb does an alternate in a position tour due to the fact an exhausted cops inspector exactly who finally closes the scenario. A great amount of taking and you will puffing is completed because of the most of the concerned.” [ a dozen ]
